Eugene Applebaum
Founder Arbor Drugs,
CVS Board Member
Eugene Applebaum does not believe in standing still. The founder of Arbor Drugs, Inc., has moved into the next phase of his career and his life with the same philosophies and commitment that brought him to the pinnacle of the drugstore industry.
Mr. Applebaum is the President of the Arbor Investments Group, based in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, which oversees his real estate and financial ventures. He founded the company after CVS, Inc., acquired Arbor Drugs in April 1998. A graduate of the Wayne State University College of Pharmacy & Health Professions, Mr. Applebaum launched his first store, Civic Drugs, in Dearborn, Michigan, in 1963. In 1974, he formed Arbor Drugs by bringing together six drugstores in the metropolitan Detroit area. He executed Arbor's 35-year growth strategy by attracting and retaining an outstanding team.
Drug Store News inducted Mr. Applebaum into the Retail Hall of Honors in 1998. Also, for the second time in six years, Drug Store News named Arbor the Regional Chain of the Year in 1995. Financial World magazine named him 1995 CEO of the Year, and, in 1998, his alma mater granted Mr. Applebaum an honorary Doctorate of Law degree.
Mr. Applebaum is a charter member of the Wayne State University Foundation Board. In 1998, he contributed the largest individual gift in Wayne State University's history, donating $5 million toward the construction of the University's Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. Mr. Applebaum says, "Looking into the 21st Century, I want to play a leadership role in assuring that future generations receive the best health care education possible, right here, and that good jobs stay in the City and surrounding communities." In addition, he established the Eugene Applebaum Professorship of Entrepreneurial Studies at the University of Michigan Business School.
